Egypt’s Grand Imam of Al-Azhar invited to visit the Comoros

CAIRO - 15 June 2026: The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed El-Tayeb, has received an official invitation to visit the Comoros, extended by Comorian Foreign Minister Mohamed Mbaé Chanfiou. 

The trip would mark a historic milestone as the first visit by a Grand Imam to the Indian Ocean islands, said the Egyptian Sheikhdom of Al-Azhar in a statement on Sunday.

Minister Chanfiou noted that the visit is designed to deepen historical relations and establish new avenues for religious, scientific, and cultural cooperation. 

He lauded the Grand Imam's leading role in championing Islamic solidarity and progress across Africa, stating that the historic visit would deeply resonate with the Comorian population as a reflection of enduring spiritual brotherhood.
